Worthington to Blue Earth, Minnesota

August 10, 2006

We tightened the water pump pack nut and checked the oil before leaving Worthington, Minnesota this morning. The car has not used or leaked oil so far. I like a regular old stock packed pump for situations like this.

The car has a 4-blade truck fan and it would be a bear to change the pump on the road. You can usually nurse a packed pump along but if a trick seal in one of the so-called leakless pumps fails, the pump must be changed.

We have been following what the locals call "old Rt 16." We finally had to get local help this morning to locate the route, and then it was under construction and detoured to the super slab.

The detour dumped us in Jackson, Minnesota where we gassed up and bought some carpet tacks to refasten the header upholstery that was hanging in Howard's face.

We stopped for a picture at a log cabin that was built before 1862.

Marvin Manske

Our destination was Blue Earth to visit Marvin Manske, a fellow A'er. We were to call Marvin from Jackson and he would drive west in his Model A to meet us in Fairmont. Marvin got anxious and was waiting in Fairmont before we reached Jackson.

Marvin treated us to lunch at the Channel Inn, a unique burger joint on one of Fairmont's 5 lakes. After lunch we followed Marvin to his farm in Blue Earth where he helped us rig a cup holder in the Model A.

Every Model A needs a good cup holder. I have a Rainmaker Remedy, prototype cupholder that I have been thinking about putting in production. Maybe this winter I can finalize the design.

Before leaving I "borrowed" Marvin's computer to see what the message boards were saying about our trip. Looks like we have fans!

Blue Earth is the home of the "Jolly Green Giant" and we took a picture of his 55-foot tall statue on the way out of town.
